Ever Wanted to Start a Community Garden?
February 4, 2009

A free class called “How to Start a Community Garden” will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2009, between 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Anson Cooperative Extension office. The speaker will be Aimee Marshall, Horticulture Extension Agent. A Community Garden is simply any piece of land gardened by a group of people. Some people may not have sunny backyards, or a place for a garden. Community gardens beautify neighborhoods and bring friends and neighbors closer together. Often, vacant lots are targeted for garden development. These gardens can grow vegetables and/or flowers in individual or family plots.
If your youth group, civic group, neighborhood, business, school, park, church, retirement community, hospital, etc. wants to learn more about starting a community garden this is a great way to find out what’s involved and how other communities have made theirs a success. There can even be a series of plots where the produce is sold to purchase community gardening supplies, or the vegetables can be donated to shelters.
Tending a small plot is a great way to save money on food bills, others like the freshness of homegrown produce, for many it’s a relaxing when to enjoy being outdoors. Children get to learn how plants grow, they learn about insects, and it gives them an opportunity to learn how to fix simple, healthy dishes. Finally, we will examine grant funding opportunities that can help make your community garden a reality.
Please call the Anson Cooperative Extension office at 704-694-2415 to register or visit our office at 501 McLaurin St., Wadesboro, NC 28170.
