Twin Valley Country Club new pro on board
(August 22, 2007) – Twin Valley Country Club has named Mitch Moretz as club pro.
Moretz, a graduate of Independence High School in Charlotte and Pfeiffer College, began work in the club’s Pro Shop on August 20.
“I’ve been playing golf since the sixth grade when my father took me to a driving range,” recalled Moretz, who has worked at golf courses in North and South Carolina since 1985 – including Monroe Country Club and Crystal Lakes Country Club in Sumter, S.C.
“I’m a small club guy,” he said of his move to TVCC.
Moretz, who played on the Pfeiffer College golf team, has been a member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) since 1990 and participates in the PGA’s Carolinas section play.
He and his wife, Dawn, and son, W.J., age 12, reside in Marshville.

Mama Noi's opens in Morven
(August 24, 2007) -– Morven has a new eatery located on the corner of N.C. 145 and U.S.
County and town dignitaries attended a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mama Noi’s Pizza and Hot Subs on August 23.
Owner/operator Chris Thammavongsa was officially welcomed to the Morven retail community by Lynn Edwards, executive director of the Anson County Chamber of Commerce, who introduced Todd Moore, vice chairman of the chamber of commerce; Anna Baucom, chairman of the Anson County Commissioners; and Theodore Carr, mayor of Morven. Also in attendance were County Commissioner Ross Streater, who represents Morven; and Buddy Stovall, Morven town councilman.
Moore said “it is a great day for Morven … and I am glad to see you here.” Moore praised Thammavongsa for her entrepreneurial endeavor in starting up a new business.
Baucom said “starting a new business is an act of faith … and we are delighted that you are here and wish you the very best."
Carr said Thammavongsa “is focused and very business-oriented” in his welcome.
Mama Noi’s offers a menu for pizza and submarine sandwiches, plus fish, turkey, ham and roast beef sandwiches; hamburgers, cheeseburgers and corndogs; chicken tenders and wings; salads; lasagna and spaghetti; and Chinese fare – such as sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, chicken or beef fried rice and egg rolls.
Mama Noi’s also has daily specials – steak subs on Monday; super subs on Tuesday; roast beef subs on Wednesday; ham or steak subs on Thursday; turkey subs on Friday; Italian subs on Saturday; and turkey or ham subs on Sunday. The daily special price includes drinks and fries.
During the ribbon-cutting, Thammavongsa introduced friends, family members and employees and said, “I am so glad to see everyone here today. I want to thank my family and partners … and I hope I can help this community.”
She introduced her mother, Baokai Katasin; her uncle, Charlie Manivanh; and her sister, Suwannee Katasin; and her friends Joyce and Billy Perhealth. Billy Perhealth was the contractor who built the restaurant at the signal light in Morven. She said Mama Noi restaurants also are located in Norwood, Mount Gilead, Ellerbe, Hamlet and Rockingham.

Anson's unemployment rate dips to 7.0% for July
(August 24, 2007) –- Anson County’s unemployment rate dipped slightly in July – to 7.0%, down .4% from June.
Anson’s jobless rate was 7.4% in June (846 unemployed); 7.1% in May (805 unemployed); 6.9% in April (779 unemployed); 7.0% in March (789 unemployed); 7.3% in February (825 unemployed); and 6.9% in January (764 unemployed).
In July, Anson County’s labor force numbered 11,294 (down 105 from June); the number of employed people was 10,500 (down 53 from June); and the number of unemployed people was 794 (down 52 from June).
The June breakdown for Anson’s neighboring counties:
- Montgomery – 11,742 labor force; 787 unemployed; a rate of 6.7% (up .2% from June).
- Richmond – 20,860 labor force; 1,629 unemployed; 7.8% rate (up .6% from June).
- Stanly – 30,136 labor force; 1,659 unemployed; 5.5% rate (no change from June).
- Union – 88,347 labor force; 3,902 unemployed; 4.4% rate (up .1% from June).
For July, the state’s unemployment rate was 5.2% – up .1% from June. North Carolina’s labor force numbered 4,581,689 in July with 238,581 people jobless.
Statewide, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 11.0%, followed by Vance (8.2%) and Edgecombe (7.9%) counties.
