Tractor Supply to open store in July
(May 9, 2008) -- The Brentwood, Tenn.-based Tractor Supply Co. will have a store open in Wadesboro by July 7 -- occupying space in the former Wal-Mart building in the Anson Station Shopping Center.
Tractor Supply officials are currently working with the Employment Security Commission in a mass hire to fill positions, including those that will help open the store, said Jeff Baloga, store manager. "There has been a significant amount of planning and study that went into our decision to locate in Wadesboro," he said.
"We feel this is the place we need to be ... and feel we are in the right place," Baloga said, adding "We cater to the small hobby farmer."
Tractor Supply is a supermarket for farm maintenance products (fencing, agricultural spraying equipment, specialty feeds, livestock feeders), general maintenance equipment (air compressors, welders, generators, pumps, plumbing items, paint),lawn and garden products (tillers, fertilizers, long handle tools), animal care (feed and supplements, health and medicine products, tack and equipment, pet supplies), apparel (men's and ladies' work clothes and Western wear and footwear, work and garden gloves), and automotive accessories (batteries, lubricants, tarps and tiedowns, truck toolboxes, trailers, towing parts and accessories, fuel tanks).
"We do not sell tractors," Baloga said, "But we do sell riding lawn mowers and tractor parts and accessories."
According to information found on Tractor Supply's website, the company was started in 1938 by Charles E. Schmidt Sr. of Chicago, Ill., who established a mail order tractor parts business. By 1939, it had grown into a successful retail store in Minot, N.D.
Today, Tractor Supply is one of the largest retail chains in America (with over 750 retail stores in 40 states), which serves full- and part-time farmers and ranchers, hobby farmers, rural homeowners and contractors. Tractor Supply employs more than 10,000 team members. Its stock is traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol “TSCO.” The company's annual revenue surpasses $2 billion.
Tractor Supply stores are primarily located in rural areas and the outlying suburbs of major cities. The typical Tractor Supply store has 15,000-24,000 square feet of inside selling space with a similar amount of outside space used to display agricultural fencing, livestock equipment and horse stalls.
